It’s not been an easy time for Fleetwood recently. Not only had we slipped out of contention for automatic promotion but had fallen out of the play-off positions too but the Cod Army got back into to promotion race on New Years Day with a 3-1 win over Accrington at Highbury.

An early goal was needed to calm the nerves really and this duly arrived when Jon Parkin put us ahead with only six-minutes having been played. The hangover didn’t prevent the supporter’s from celebrating that one.

Fleetwood had other chances to extend the lead before half time really, and you worried that failure to do that could come back to haunt but Accrington didn’t really pose much of an attacking threat with Kayode Odejayi isolated up front on his own.

David Ball and Antoni Sarcevic, who had both failed to take first half chances, combined in the second half with Sarcevic’s cross into the box finishing Ball and he made no mistake this time as the lead was doubled and the match all but won?

That was until some substitutions breathed some new life into Accrington late on and Odejayi found himself left unmarked from a freekick to give the visiting supporter’s hope as he headed home.

Fears that Accrington could fightback were eliminated in injury time though as Stewart Murdoch combined with his fellow substitute Daniel Carr, who scored his first goal for the club and confirmed the points were safe.

This game seems so long ago already, that’s probably because we’ve been denied the chance to play again since.

Does feel like that doesn’t it! On the plus side, at least for a while we will be or should be fresher than others and we can capitalise on that. League is so tight it’s still anyone’s game really.

You can never beat getting games and being involved, especially if you’ve won the last one, but it’s a silver lining I agree with.
