The return to pre-season training is something we already know Graham Alexander’s been really happy with and whilst Fleetwood have a strong core in place we are in needed of a little more.

As things stand Alexander has managed to bring in Jimmy Ryan, Declan McManus, Amari’i Bell and Vamara Sanogo, with most of this business conducted early. We already know from Alexander’s previous thoughts that he knows it’s a small squad but this is a squad he feels is looking particularly strong.

Following our return to pre-season training at Poolfoot Farm he’s delivered an update on his squad, praising those he’s brought in but making it clear, as he did to them, that he’s looking for a couple more additions.

Commenting on the Official Website he said.

‘We spoke to the players this morning (Wednesday), and said that there will be additions in pre-season to help improve the squad.

‘We don’t do our business publically and link ourselves with this player and that, we just try to get them over the line and announce it in a proper manner.

‘We’ve got a base of a good squad at the moment but there are a couple of additions we need to make to improve the competition.’

Should things go as planned, all being well, Alexander’s hoping to get these additions in place before we head to Germany as part of our continued pre-season spending some time away for squad bonder, increased training and of course two pre-season friendlies.

This time away as a group will work well and give all a chance to get used to each other spending day in day out together for a while.

‘That week away, as I’ve said in previous years, is 24/7 around each other, the staff and the players.

‘There is a lot of social time together, and it is important to get that bond especially with the new players, so ideally we`d love to get some players in before we go away.

‘It’s just to get that group really bedded down and working well together so that when we come back we’re in proper fashion.’

During this stay in Germany we’ll face Borussia Dortmund B and Alemannia Aachen.

Alexander also spoke about those already in place as part of his squad having a ‘head start’ so he’s told them it’s down to these players to make an early impressions from day one.

We’ve got a good core in place with competition running through it.

‘I think we’ve got a good core of the group that has done so well over the last two-years. We just want to improve on that in any way we can.

‘We have to have our experience though, especially in the central areas, and we’ve got that with Stevie Jordan, Pondy and Jimmy Ryan.’

If we can add this player or two then the final pieces of the jigsaw should fall into place ahead of the new season, shouldn’t they?
