With people pouring over the fixture list for the coming League One 2015-16 campaign, it may have slipped the attention of some that we signed midfielder Jimmy Ryan.

Well it did me anyway!

The 26 year old comes to us on a two year deal from Chesterfield, having played 52 times for them last season as they reached the League One Play Offs.

Speaking to the Official Site chairman Andy Pilley was thrilled to capture a player of his experience and talent and he also believed it was a statement of intent given how people look at Fleetwood and our finances.

‘We are absolutely thrilled that Jimmy Ryan is joining the football club. I sincerely believe he is one of the best midfielders in League One. It is a statement of intent. A lot of people have wrongly assumed that because the focus is on value for money, that we lack ambition. We have just spent £6 million on a new training ground. We are as hungry as ever and we want to eventually see this Club in the Championship. Players like Jimmy Ryan will help us reach our target.’

Whatever happens with spending, I’m not sure anybody can doubt the ambition of Fleetwood given our growth through the Football pyramid over the last decade.

At the tender age of 26, he already has over 300 career appearances to his name, with a return of 36 goals.

Manager Graham Alexander was rightly pleased with the capture as well, and he explained.

‘Jimmy is a very good player first and foremost. We know of his qualities having played against us for Chesterfield. We have played quite a few games against Chesterfield and he has always been a difficult player to come up against. We are delighted to bring him to Fleetwood Town. We have spoken about the profile of player we want at the Club and he certainly fits into that category. He will help our younger players with his experience even though he is only 26. He has played a lot of games and I think he will fit into the squad perfectly. He will be a quality player for us.’

Ryan himself said that having spoken to the gaffer and seen and heard the ambitions of the club, it was a key reason why he has made the move to us.

‘I came up to Fleetwood on Monday and met the gaffer. We spoke at length and he showed me around the stadium and the new training ground. He sold the Club to me and I am delighted to now be a Fleetwood Town player. I am happy everything is all sorted and I can`t wait for the start of pre-season.’

Going on to talk about the ambition of the club as we enter into our second year in League One, Ryan was convinced there were more bright days ahead of us and he’s looking forward to playing his part in that now.

‘This is a very ambitious football club. The manager explained what direction the Club is moving in and I want to play a part in that. I have come up against Fleetwood before during my time at Chesterfield so I know all about the Club. I actually scored at Highbury Stadium in the JPT two seasons ago. Obviously that is now behind me and hopefully now I can score a few more goals at Highbury but in Fleetwood Town colours. I can`t wait for the new season to get underway.’
