Postponement Was Right, Timing Was Wrong

With fans quite rightly up in arms about the late postponement of the Wycombe Wanderers game, CEO Steve Curwood has said he is waiting for answers over it.

The match was postponed 20 minutes before kick off, and although Curwood believes it was obviously the right decision to have been made by the referee, given the pitch was frozen the night before and didn’t thaw, he wants answers to why the decision to cancel the game was made so late, and after fans had travelled when clearly the decision could’ve been made hours earlier.

Speaking to the Official Site he explained.

‘I think it was the right decision, the pitch was bone hard and unplayable. We’ve arrived at around 12.30 and it was rock hard like a car park. Two ground staff were present on the pitch and just brushing the white surface with brooms and a leaf blower. The concerning element was that nobody made Fleetwood Town nor the referee aware at any stage that the game would be in doubt when it was obviously in doubt from the word go in the morning.’

He goes on to say that the first the club knew about the playing surface was when they physically arrived at the ground, so he will be asking questions on how that could happen and the obvious trouble it put the supporters through and he’s waiting on answers.

The confusing element is that Adams Park has undersoil heating which would’ve allowed the game to go ahead, but it wasn’t turned on overnight as apparently no frost was forecast, but again for him not knowing about this until midday is ‘bewildering’.

‘Once the pitch was frozen this game should have been called off at 9am or earlier, to stop all the unnecessary upheavel for our fans, and Wycombe supporters who’s afternoon was also wasted.’
