Fleetwood ended the away hoodoo last weekend but this past weekend we lost our proud unbeaten record at Highbury when we were unable to build on that away win as we slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Walsall.

Martin Paterson was brought in to make an impact, ideally to score goals and he almost marked his home debut with one. Having worked an opening his curling effort was tipped away by Richard O’Donnell.

Uncertainty at the back allowed Romaine Sawyers to get in at the back post and fire past Chris Maxwell to give Walsall the lead.

Half Time: Fleetwood 0 Walsall 1

Another mistake at the back almost cost us a second goal after the break.

Maxwell, usually so assured, scuffed a poor goal kick straight to Sawyers but he wasn’t able to capitalise on this occasion.

Paterson, who was our biggest threat, finally did beat O’Donnell after going around him but Paul Downing got back to clear off the line and leave us frustrated.

Full Time: Fleetwood 0 Walsall 1

Not only had we not lose at home this season, and ever in League 1, the unbeaten run stretched back nine months so it’s a disappointment to lose that but obviously more disappointing to lose and miss a chance to close the gap on the Play-Offs.

We’d lose at home at some point though, how we react to this now will be the next thing.
