Two Easter fixtures saw Fleetwood pick up all six points on offer from Gillingham and Yeovil on Good Friday and Monday.

Speaking to the Official Site firstly following the one nil victory over Gillingham courtesy of a Gareth Evans goal inside of the opening 20 minutes, the manager said it had been a good test for us and he was pleased to see us come out with all three points.

‘We had to compete really well against a very good team. We took the lead early on and controlled the first half. We knew there would be a reaction after the break and we managed that well for large parts. They put us under pressure from corners and set-pieces, but defended really well and picked up a big three points. We passed the ball well and stretched them when we needed to, and the goal was a great reward for our good player. We did the right things at the right times. We spoke at half time that we`d been in these situations before and we did immensely well.’

Alexander goes on to say that the game was the perfect example of defending from the front really as it’s never about one or two players it’s about everybody doing their jobs properly and covering for their colleagues, and that was what we did.

‘We showed great discipline by not giving cheap free kicks away, and that breaks the momentum of the opposing team. We could have scored a couple more on the break too, and David Ball had a great strike saved well by the keeper. It was a really pleasing three points as it`s a tough place to come to.’

Coming up quickly next was Yeovil, and that saw a fantastic performance and a four nil victory with a brace from David Ball with Jamie Proctor and Ash Hunter getting the others.

It was Hunter’s first goal for the club.

Speaking after the game, Alexander explained.

‘We`ve had other games this season where we should have scored more goals, so today was really pleasing. We`re coming into the real business end of the season now, so to follow what was a great win for us at Gillingham with another here is brilliant. It puts our goal difference back in the positive margin which is important in a league this tight. We spoke about the expectancy levels after the Gillingham game, and that you can`t just win a game in 20 minutes. It`s about the whole 95 minutes. We had to make sure we did things right, but the early goal did obviously settle us and the fans down.’

Alexander went on to say that the reason for his real delight is that at one nil or even two nil, the game can change quickly and a very dominant performance can turn against you but with three or four not only is their more wriggle room for genuine errors but it also kills the spirit of the opposition.

Another pleasing thing from the game was the performances of the youngsters.

‘We`ve got a lot of belief in these young lads who are in our squad at the moment, and Ash has come on in other games and contributed very well. Strikers always want to score goals and I thought it was a great finish from him as it was a little bit awkward.’
